Before I started my course at Plymouth College of Art I spent time looking into interiors as I was starting to consider pursuing a career in this area.

I've always been interested in the concept of 'Up-Cycling'...

upcycle

verb up·cy·cle | \ ˈəp-ˌsī-kəl \upcycled; upcycling

Definition of upcycle

: to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item : to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value)

...my parents often up-cycled old pieces of furniture, giving new life to old pieces left on the side of the road destined for the dump.

It's a great way of recycling and repurposing, bringing old furniture up to date in a new contemporary way. I feel that as a society we are gaining consciousness on eco-friendly interiors and considering more sustainable buying.

I took an old Lloyd Loom Chair, donated by my parents who were keen for it to have a fresh look. I decide to paint it in Annie Sloan chalk paint (a go to brand when considering up-cycling). I chose an upholstery fabric for the cushioned base which included a combination of warm tones complimenting the soft 'old violet' paint.

The process over all took a few days and was really enjoyable. I was really satisfied with the final outcome.
